Historically it was so insufficiently described in Catalogues that I think you will be glad to hear what I can tell you about it. Some fifty years ago it belonged to my father, the Rev. C. Upham Barry, of Ryde, I.W. On his death in 1883 it came into the possession of my sister, the wife of Colonel P. G. Hewitt..." |
He goes on to say that he tried to purchase it for £500 to keep it in the family but that she put it up for auction apparently without success and that she finally sold it to Agnews for £400, his father having originally paid £180. He comments that a "blot which formerly existed has been cleverly removed" and enquires as to what the recipient had to pay for the picture. 4-sides 8vo.

The Portuguese version of the English title "Art of the Expansion and Beyond". This catalogue illustrates how European, particularly Portuguese, culture and art influenced the world from the 15th century onwards. The introduction presents an historical account of the Portuguese presence in Asia. It includes a brief discussion on the complex commercial network that existed in the region, as well as in Africa, before the arrival of the Portuguese. It also gives insight into the unique empire established by the Portuguese. The catalogue examines a selection of seventeen works of art, many of them extraordinary in their rarity, exoticism and aesthetic beauty, including a brass plaque from the Kingdom of Benin; a tortoiseshell casket and two black mastic and mother-of-pearl overlaid objects from Gujarat; a group of rare Chinese export porcelains and a six-fold lacquer screen from China; and three namban objects from Japan.

Birgit Skiöld (1923-1982) was a Swedish printmaker, heralded as one of the most important printmakers of the 20th century. From 1958 until her death in May 1982, Birgit ran the highly successful Print Workshop in the basement of 28 Charlotte Street, London. The workshop was the first open-access professional print workshop in England. After the death of the artist, "A Tribute to Birgit Skiold" was produced to raise funds for the Birgit Skiold Memorial Trust in 1983. 118 artists from various countries contributed free of charge an edition of 25 prints in the 30 x 30 cm format, to create a portfolio of three volumes. The artists featured in this portfolio were taught by or worked with Skiöld.
What we offer here is the third volume of the portfolios containing 36 (of 43) prints, numbered 76-118; lacking seven prints, that is numbers 77, 90, 92, 97, 102, 106, & 107. But with the addition of two prints from the second portfolio, being: John Hubbard, untitled, etching 21/25 & Andrew Logan, "Path to Heaven", etching 21/25. Each print is numbered 18/25* and signed by the artist. In excellent condition and contained in the original blue cloth over boards drop-down box with loosely inserted printed title/index/numbered limitation leaf.
