Two volumes folio, original half maroon morocco, spines gilt on raised bands, gilt Arms of Bristol blocked to upper covers. The binding gilt stamped "Bound by Frost & Reed, Bristol" (the publishers).

Binding rubbed and scuffed, headband of Volume 2 worn & chipped. Some foxing although not affecting every plate. Although dated 1885 to the spines the plates are actually dated within the plate marks 1885 to 1889. Each plate marked "Third State". Each plate, which is on heavy paper is accompanied by a leaf of the same paper printed with the title of the plate and the word "Notes".

This issue does not include the descriptive text by John Taylor, and was issued with half-titles only. With printed note at end stating that this issue is limited to 240 copies and that the plates have been destroyed.

Bindings rubbed and scuffed but perfectly presentable on the shelf and solidly bound with no cracking to the hinges, one cloth side damp marked, corner damp-mark to 1 plate at end of Volume 2. Some foxing, mainly marginal. Folding map with two marginal tears (without loss) and stain lower right, otherwise bright and clean.

The Directions to the Binder lists 41 plates but of the 28 copies sold at auction during the past 40 years 18 have had 40 plates only as here; the plate not present is "Lady Miller's Monument".

Part 1: London, J. Davy, 1821. Part 2: C. Gilmour, 1838. Two parts in one volume. 4to (10 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches), pages: iv:136:(iv):124, later three-quarter crushed tan morocco, spine decoratively gilt, top edge gilt, the binding by Riviere. Once a handsome binding but now with untidy chip out of lower 1 1/2 inches of the backstrip and cloth sides marked and spotted, short cracks to joints, hinges very firm. Endpapers foxed otherwise internally very good and with good margins.

The title-page to the 2nd part reads: An Essay Towards the Description of the North Division of Wiltshire by Me John Aubrey of Easton Pierse. Small oval gilt label on front pastedown : "Ex Musaeo Huthii", i.e. from the Huth Library, begun by Henry Huth and continued by his son Alfred H. Huth. The Library was dispersed by Sotheby's in a number of sales between 1911 and 1920.
