Originally published 1840- 1842, this facsimile edition in four volumes limited to 1000 copies and signed by Dr. John Hemming, Director and Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society and numbered 215. With 146 plates, 82 of which are in colour, and a large folding plate to Volume I. Four volumes 4to ((12 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches), publisher's half tan calf gilt, marbled boards. The four volumes contained within the original custom pine case with hinged lift-up reading slope. Volumes 3 & 4 unopened and still in the publisher's cellophane wrapping. The four volumes in truly excellent condition, the wood case with a few light scratches but very sound.

The four volumes comprise: Volume I. Fossil Mammalia. by Robert Owen. Volume II. Mammalia. by George Waterhouse. Volume III. Birds by John Gould. Volume IV. Fish by Leonard Jenyns; together with Reptillia byThomas Bell. This set was printed and bound to match Darwin's personal copy.
