Complete with 31 plates, the views oval sepia aquatints, double-page tinted map.Two volumes 8vo (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches), pages vii:328:iv:7 & 308:iii;20, 19th Century half green calf, marbled boards, spines gilt lettered direct; some rubbing to marbled boards, overall very good and sound, clean internally. Attractive 20th Century bookplate on front pastedowns. Inscribed "Presented to Mr John Master by his Pupil Lord John Russell, Woodnesborough, Nr. Sandwich" Russell was a pupil of the Revd. John Smith at Woodnesborough between 1805 &1808 which if the volumes were a parting gift Russell would have been aged 16 years. Ruseell served as Prime Minister 1846-1852 & again 1865-1866.

J.G. Short, Lyndhurst, 1876. 2nd edition (but the first to be illustrated with photographs). Folding map at front and 10 albumen photographs mounted on thin card leaves within black ruled borders; these captioned in very light pencil on the blank margins. 8vo (8 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches), 106-pages with 1 leaf of advertisements at end. Original bevelled green cloth attractively blocked in gilt, all edges gilt. Some marking to lower bevelled edge, headbands a trifle bruised. Overall this is a superb copy. Inscribed on verso of front free endpaper: "Presented to G. J. Smith, August 29th 1880, by his loving wife Fannie".
