Large 4to (12 1/4 x 10 inches), pages: xxi:503. Publisher's full maroon morocco blocked in gilt, all edges gilt, a little rubbed, indent in backstrip.

The subscriber for this volume was C.B.Fry (incorrectly listed as C.P. Fry) who has presented the volume to Walter R. Hammond. The calligraphic inscription on the front flyleaf reading, "To Walter R. Hammond on his 24th Birthday, June 19th 1927 from C.P.F with sincere regards & good wishes" (The caligrapher repeating the C.P.F error). Unfortunately a 4 inch diagonal tear into the blank lower margin of this leaf has been repaired by a lunatic with sellotape with the resultant staining. However this tear is 2 1/2 inches away from the inscription. A very nice association copy with two of the great names of British cricket: C.B.Fry (1872-1956) & Walter Reginald "Wally" Hammond (1903-1965). With a newspaper cutting reporting the auction sale of Hammond's trophies & books after his death. This volume is mentioned as being the most expensive of the book lots.

Engraved frontispiece of a well attended cock-fight under a banner heading, "The Royal Pastime of Cocking". Small 8vo (6 1/2 x 4 inches), pages: (34):92, 19th Century half polished black calf, marbled boards, spine gilt lettered direct, small old circular label bearing hand-written numerals on upper cover. The frontispiece with upper fore-corner torn away affecting part of the engraved banner, laid-down at an early date, some browning throughout but generally good. Pages 81-92 comprise poems in praise of cock-fighting including one by Sir Richard Blackmore.

Only the second work devoted entirely to cock-fighting to be published, the first being W. Machrie's, "An Essay upon the Royal Recreation and Art of Cocking", 1705. Both works are extremely rare; only 4 copies of the Howlett are recorded in English libraries and only one copy of each has been offered at auction in the past 70 years, the Machrie in 1999 and the Howlett in 1982.
